Because sometimes your pets know you need a break before you do.

Plus, they’ve been watching you.

The emails.
The rushing.
The phone in your hand.
The sighing at traffic, deadlines and life in general.

Frankly, your pets are concerned.

So perhaps it’s time they packed their bowls, loaded you into the car and brought you somewhere you can remember how to breathe.

Welcome to Red Cliff Lodge.

We welcome big pets, small pets, fluffy pets, scruffy pets, graceful pets and those whose charm is perhaps best appreciated by the people who love them most.

And yes — their humans may come too.

Red Cliff Lodge. Not a getaway. A reset.

You bring the pets. We’ll provide the wild.

Red Cliff Lodge is a private, off-grid bush retreat tucked beneath the red cliffs in the upper reaches of the Marico.

There are no crowded hotel corridors, no communal lawns full of strangers and no noisy resort atmosphere.

Instead, there is space.

Space to sniff. Space to explore. Space to stretch out. Space for your humans to slow down while you investigate every interesting smell, sound and movement around you.

The cabin is booked privately, so there are no other accommodation guests sharing your immediate living space.

That means less bustle, fewer unfamiliar faces and more room for everyone — two-legged and four-legged — to settle into bushveld time.

What your human can expect

While your pets are busy being themselves, we’ll keep the humans occupied too.

In a Pet Friendly setting, they wake to birds instead of traffic.

Then, they have coffee beneath the trees and spend lazy afternoons outside.

If they feel like it, they cool off at the splash tub or river.

After a lazy day, they braai under an enormous bushveld sky.

Then, they watch wildlife move through the landscape.

Finally, they look at stars they had forgotten existed.

Alternatively, they explore the surrounding wilderness or do absolutely nothing.

We particularly recommend the last option.

They look tired.

And what your pets can expect

At Red Cliff, pets aren’t treated as an inconvenient extra.

They’re part of the family holiday.

There are outdoor spaces to enjoy, interesting smells everywhere.

And, there is enough natural entertainment to make even the most committed couch potato reconsider their life choices.

There are no city pavements, no lifts and no tiny patch of artificial grass labeled “Pet Area”.

This is the bush.

Which brings us to something important.

The wild really is wild

Red Cliff is situated in a natural environment where wildlife moves freely.

Kudu, nyala, bushbuck, warthog, baboons, monkeys and other animals may pass through the area, while smaller creatures, snakes and predators also form part of the wider ecosystem.

For that reason, pets must be supervised at all times.

Please don’t allow pets to chase wildlife or wander away unattended, no matter how convincing they may be about their ability to handle the situation.

They cannot.

We also recommend keeping pets close during early mornings, evenings and when moving through unfamiliar bush.

Red Cliff is pet-friendly.

The wildlife was here first.

We respect both.

Management includes several highly opinionated baboons.

To keep Red Cliff enjoyable for everyone:

  • Pets should be friendly, well-socialized and house-trained.
  • Please supervise them around wildlife and the river.
  • Bring your pet’s own food, bowls, bedding and favorite blanket.
  • Bring a lead or harness for walks and unfamiliar areas.
  • Please clean up after your pets.
  • Pets should not be allowed to damage furniture, linen or the property.
  • Please let us know when booking that your four-legged family members will be joining you.

And if your pet is convinced that the bed belongs to them…

That is a discussion between you and your pet.

We have learned not to interfere in family politics.

What to pack for your four-legged family members

Bring their usual food and treats, bowls, bedding or blankets, leads and harnesses, waste bags, any regular medication, suitable tick-and-flea protection, a towel for muddy paws and a favorite toy or two.

And perhaps an old tennis ball.

Although we should warn you that the bush has an extraordinary ability to make tennis balls disappear forever.

The road to the reset

Red Cliff is deliberately away from the crowds.

That means the final part of the journey is on gravel roads and conditions can vary, particularly after rain.

A high-clearance vehicle, SUV or 4×4 is strongly recommended. Arrival during daylight hours is best.

Your pets will probably think the road is part of the adventure.

Your human may use different language.

Either way, when you arrive, you’ll understand why it was worth every bump.

Dear Pets…

If your human has been working too much, sleeping too little, staring at screens, answering emails at dinner, complaining about traffic or saying, “I just need a break”…

You know what to do.

Bring them to Red Cliff.

Take them outside.

Make them sit beside the river.

Remind them to look up.

Get them away from the noise.

And if necessary, lie on their phone.

Sometimes humans need a little help remembering what matters.

Bring your human to Red Cliff

Tell them to pack the food.

You bring the enthusiasm.

We’ll provide the cliffs, the river, the silence, the stars and a little bit of wild.

Not a getaway. A reset.

Pet-friendly for your four-legged family members.
Highly recommended for the humans who need a break.
